The Rottnest Channel Swim is approximately a 20km swim from Cottesloe Beach, Perth, Australia to Rottnest Island in the Indian Ocean. I completed the swim in less than 7 hours on February 22, 1992. The water temp was around 72 degrees. Air temp was around 102 degrees. I could have done without the jellyfish. Otherwise, a very good swim. Very choppy in the middle of the swim. Every time I would stop to ask how far is the island, my support crew would yell "not far" or "come on mate, you don't won't to be the only yank to try, then not make it." In fact, I was the first yank who did it and the only one until about 15 years later. Mandatory Shark Insurance surely adds a startling element to the psychological preparation. Now there are over a thousand who have completed the solo swim. When I did it I was about number 48.
