TIFF 2008
Highlight of the festival was without a doubt the SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE sneak preview. A unanimous standing ovation at the end was totally unexpected before entering the Palm theatre. Before the film, Danny Boyle asks the audience if it is okay if he joins us in the audience because it is his first viewing on the big screen. I loved the film, thus not surprised when it won the Best Picture Oscar.
Sitting next to Peter Sellars at the Backlot, we both remarked how the Russian filmmaker, Sergei Dvortsevoy, reminded us of Bela Tarr. Always a joy to discover some gems at the Backlot and, of course, see Peter Sellars.
Also loved the tribute to Jean Simmons, who at 78 seemed so willing to share with us her history in film not only in the film clips, but in a wonderful q&a. Who can ever forget her in BLACK NARCISSUS as a teenager in one of her first films?
Also, of note, is the breakout performance of Michael Fassbender in Steve McQueen's debut film HUNGER. It marks the beginning of other outstanding cinematic collaborations between the two to come right here in Telluride.
