TIFF 2005
The festival began for me with a Friday night world premiere of CAPOTE. Philip Seymour Hoffman, director Bennett Miller and Catherine Keener were in attendance. I could see Hoffman pacing around near one of the exit doors, obviously anxious about his performance. It most likely was the first time he saw the film with an audience. As the buzz trickled throughout the festival's 4 days, there was no doubt in anyone's mind he would be nominated for an Oscar and most likely win it, which he did.
Other highlights this year were the tributes to Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne showing their hit film and Oscar winner THE CHILD and to Charlotte Rampling with film clips of her famous career. What a class act(ress)!
PARADISE NOW was the surprise hit of the festival with a fascinating q&a featuring director Hany Abu-Assad.
Loved seeing Mickey Rooney sprawled out on the bench in front of the Sheridan Inn with a big toothy grin waving to all who recognized him as they passed by.
Telluride always surprises us with a film classic or two usually not available other than on the festival circuit. This year it was THE PASSENGER, definitely not one to disappoint any Michaelangelo Antonioni or Jack Nicholson fan.
